If you are stuck while installing the driver you can search other posts such as the FT232R USB driver page which gives a good explanation as to what goes wrong most times and how to install the driver if everything else fails. Below are 2 sets of drivers. The first are the latest drivers while there are legacy drivers for older Windows 98 computers.

This hardware uses the Prolific hardware inside so you can also search this website for more updated drivers. Prolific has excluded older chipsets in their new drivers. The Aten driver is much older for the older chipsets. Download the driver below and then extract the content. You will note that the driver is an older driver for the old machines. If you wish to install the driver on Windows 10 then you can try and install this in compatibility mode. Likewise also see the PL2303RA USB to Serial Driver on here.

What is the difference between RS-232 and USB?

Here’s a simplified explanation of the differences between RS-232 and USB:

RS-232:

  • RS-232 is an older method of communication.
  • It defines how devices physically connect and transfer data.
  • RS-232 doesn’t have a specific data format or built-in error-checking.
  • It has slower data transfer, shorter cables, larger connectors, and limited ability to connect multiple devices.
  • RS-232 supports only point-to-point communication, meaning it connects one device directly to another.

USB:

  • USB is a modern communication system allowing multiple devices to connect to a computer using one port.
  • Devices need specific USB connectors and cables (like Type-A, Type-B, or Type-C) to connect.
  • USB is designed for high-speed data transfer between one computer and multiple peripherals.
  • It’s more complex to create low-level interfaces for USB.
  • In most modern computers, USB has replaced RS-232 for most connections. However, RS-232 is still used in certain industries for its simplicity and reliability.
