You can download the FT2232D Dual USB UART/FIFO IC driver here. The FT2232D, being the 3rd generation of FTDI’s popular USB UART/FIFO IC, builds upon the FT2232C and FT2232L. However, it’s important to note that the FT2232D does not belong to a new generation of devices.

Furthermore, the FT2232D is not only lead-free but also compatible with the original FT2232C and FT2232L, both in terms of pins and functionality. In fact, it retains all the features of the original devices and even introduces some additional ones. Notably, it includes a CPU-style FIFO mode and an extended operating temperature range.
This device boasts two versatile UART/FIFO controllers that can be independently configured in various modes. Alongside the UART interface, FIFO interface, and Bit-Bang IO mode found in the previous generation FT232B and FT245B devices, the FT2232D offers an array of new operation modes. One such mode is the Multi-Protocol Synchronous Serial Engine (MPSSE) interface, which is specifically designed for synchronous serial protocols like I2C, JTAG, and SPI bus. Likewise see also the FT232H Single Channel USB UART/FIFO IC Driver and FT2232H Dual USB UART/FIFO IC Driver.
Hardware Features
The single chip USB with dual channel serial/parallel ports offers a wide range of configurations. Likewise one of its remarkable features is that the entire USB protocol is handled on the chip. Thus eliminating the need for USB-specific firmware programming.
For those requiring UART functionality, the chip provides an option similar to the FT232B-style UART interface. This option supports full handshaking and modem interface signals. The UART interface also offers flexibility in terms of data format. Likewise allowing for 7 or 8 data bits, 1 or 2 stop bits, and a choice of Odd/Even/Mark/Space/No Parity.
With respect to data transfer rates, the chip supports a range of speeds. It enables data transfer rates from 300 Baud up to 1M Baud for RS232 communication. Moreover, for TTL and RS422/RS485 interfaces, the data transfer rate can reach up to 3M Baud. In RS485 applications, the chip includes auto transmit enable control using the TXDEN pin.
Additional Features
Additionally, the chip incorporates support for event characters and line break conditions. It also features transmit and receive LED drive signals on each channel, allowing for convenient status indication.
Another interface option available is the FT245B-style FIFO interface, which offers a bi-directional data bus and a straightforward 4-wire handshaking interface. This option enables data transfer rates of up to 1M Byte/second for parallel FIFO communication.
Furthermore, the chip provides enhanced Bit-Bang Mode with RD# and WR# strobes, as well as a new Synchronous Bit-Bang Mode interface option. Additionally, it offers a Multi-Protocol Synchronous Serial Engine (MPSSE) interface option, specifically designed for synchronous serial protocols such as JTAG, SPI, and I2C. In addition also see the FT245R USB FIFO Driver as well as the Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller.
Chip Variations
The chip also introduces several new modes exclusively in the FT2232D variant. These include a CPU-style FIFO interface mode, MCU Host Bus Emulation Mode, and Fast Opto-Isolated Serial Interface Mode. It also provides a high I/O pin output drive option.
Configurability is a notable aspect of the chip. The interface mode and USB description strings can be easily configured in an external EEPROM, and the EEPROM itself can be programmed via USB.
In terms of power management, the chip supports USB suspend and resume conditions through the PWREN# and SI/WU pins. It accommodates bus-powered, self-powered, and high-power bus-powered USB configurations. Moreover, it incorporates an integrated Power-On-Reset circuit and offers a range of operating voltages from 4.35V to 5.25V.
The chip ensures compatibility with UHCI/OHCI/EHCI host controllers and operates at USB 2.0 Full Speed (12M bits/second). In the FT2232D variant, it extends the industrial operating temperature range to -40°C to 85°C.
In a compact 48-LD lead-free LQFP package, compliant with RoHS standards, the chip delivers convenience and reliability. FTDI’s royalty-free VCP and D2XX drivers are available, eliminating the need for USB driver development in most cases. Dedicated Windows DLLs are also provided for USB to JTAG, USB to SPI, and USB to I2C applications, enhancing the chip’s versatility.
