The FT232RL USB to Serial Adapter Driver is about a third of the price compared to the FT231X USB to serial adapter and does not have as many options however for a simple environment this will work well enough. Both chips are made by FTDI. There are driver below for MAC Linux as well as all version of Windows. We need to compare the two and see what the difference in price will make and then decide from there as to which one you would really prefer.

The Pro mini version is very cheap and it does come with LED lights to show activity. But it is not as advanced compared to others. Such as those with the FT231X USB to serial adapter which has a better range of LED indicator lights. Unlike others this adapter is very small and portable but has no extension cable as it is only the adapter. Once you have installed the drivers the serial port is automatically configured as an additional COM port which shows up in your operating system’s Device Manager. You can see more here. How to troubleshoot a USB port is also explained.
The FT232RL powers the USB to serial adapter. We’ve thoroughly tested it for compatibility with a wide range of serial devices available in the market, including several GPS and PDA devices like Garmin, Mallagan, and Palm. Notably, the USB to serial adapter operates on USB port power, automatically detecting data speed for seamless functionality.

These driver are for all versions of Windows as well as the MAC and Linux. See also the FT231X USB UART Driver as well as the FT231X Full Speed USB to Full UART and the UART Drivers.
Let’s talk about the FT232R – it’s the latest addition to FTDI’s USB UART interface Integrated Circuit Devices. Unlike regular USB to serial UART interfaces, this one comes with some extra cool features like an optional clock generator output and a security feature called FTDIChip-ID™.
What’s interesting is that the FT232R is not just a one-trick pony. It offers both asynchronous and synchronous bit bang interface modes, making it pretty versatile for different uses. Designers will also love that they’ve crammed everything needed for USB to serial designs right into the device, including the external EEPROM, clock circuit, and USB resistors.
Now, compared to its older siblings, the FT232R has added two new functions, making it a bit of a “3-in-1” chip for certain applications. First off, it can generate its own clock at different frequencies, which you can use to power up a microcontroller or other external devices. But the real kicker is the FTDIChip-ID™ – a unique number burned into the device during manufacturing.
