Prolific USB to Serial Comm Port

Solution 1:

Firstly try and run Hardware and device troubleshooter as a first solution:

• Firstly you type troubleshooting in the search bar, then click on troubleshooting.
• Secondly you will click on Hardware and Sound, click on Hardware and Devices.
• Finally you will need to follow the steps from the wizard to run the troubleshooter.

Also check your USB 3 driver if you don’t have one. The one we have here is a Windows 7 driver. Your Windows 10 should have this installed by default. If you have an older operating system then check the USB driver.

Solution 2:

See if you get an error code. The most common error is the code 10 error which the Prolific chipset as well as Prolific error 39 as well. So check your chipset and ensure that you have the correct one as the older hardware no longer supported by the latest drivers. See which chipsets you have. You will note that the Windows 8/8.1/10 are NOT supported in PL-2303HXA and PL-2303X EOL (End Of Life) chip versions. The most common problem with the chipset is that there are fake chipsets on the market. If it is cheap then it is most likely a fake Prolific chipset.

Prolific Error 10 Code

The chipsets PL2303H, PL-2303HX (Rev A), and PL-2303X is not supported for Windows 8 and above. This as they are at their end of life. If you try and run them on a higher operating system they will give your the error 10 code error in the device manager. Windows 8/8.1/10 are NOT supported in PL-2303HXA and PL-2303X EOL (End Of Life) chip versions. Note: If these solutions do not work and you have the correct chipset then you might have a Fake chipset which is not uncommon when they are bought online on the cheap. Prolific has blocked fake chips in their updates.

Solution 3:

There is another problem and this is with the old driver is still on your computer and you will need to remove the driver first. Now if you had used the PL-2303 with Windows 7 and now have upgraded to Windows 10. The problem is that you will still have the previous versions of the drivers are still on your computer. You will now need to downgrade the driver. So now you will need to use the configuration panel or “Device Manager”.

You will need to click on the COM and LPT in the driver panel and right click: the first choice should be “update driver”.

 Choose the second option “Look for a driver on my computer”. Another windows appear, and select the bottom option: “choose from a list on my computer”. You will note that there are different driver versions. These are as follows so see which one you have and then use the older version of the driver.

• – Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port Version: 3.4.48.272
• – Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port Version: 3.6.78.350

You should select the old 3.3 which is from 2009 and the later version, like 3.4 or 3.6 report the error code 10. See the main page on this website where there are different versions of the Prolific driver for your device. Downgrade the driver when the device is not working.
